Pulse
I am not an unsual teenager. I've never been given an award for anything special or nominated for an important position. I've had my share of problems and, like most teenage girls, spent countless nights crying over lost friendships, unrequited love and just everyday teenage stress.

One night I was watching a show on TV about an angel. The angel was trying to convince one of the characters not to kill himself. The man thought that dying was the easiest way out.I thought about how many times I have considered the same thing. I put my finger up to my pulse. A thought struck me: This is waht will keep me alive. No matter how many breakups I go through, no matter how many times I can't pull off my I'm-tough-and-I-don't-cry attitude, that pulse will still be there. Blood will still be pumped through my body. I can survive.

This isn't to say that I will never think about quitting or never go through a day where all hope seems to be lost. But there is one thing I know for sure: In the times of greatest sorrow, or melanchony, or hopelessness, or lifelessness, I only need to use one finger to know that I can survive it all. The steady flow of my healthy, thirteen-year-old heart is the most comforting feeling in the world.

The Dei today By Stephen Tomkins
Opus Dei, a mysterious arm of the Catholic Church, has come under the spotlight after the new education secretary in the UK government, Ruth Kelly, revealed she receives spiritual guidance from it. The best-selling novel The Da Vinci Code puts the sect at the heart of an international battle for control of the Holy Grail. So what is known about the group?

Society is fascinated by secretive religious organisations because they allow us to imagine the worst about what murky deeds happen behind their barred doors. The abusive activities of some cults have proved worse than anyone feared, but other times the reality is disappointingly banal.

One "cult" in ancient Rome was "widely known" to practice child-sacrifice, cannibalism and incestuous orgies during its initiates-only Love Feasts. That's the cult we know today as the Christian church. There can be smoke without a fire.

So what is the reality behind the rumours about Opus Dei, the Catholic movement that has been awarded its first British parish; that Education Secretary Ruth Kelly says she gets spiritual support from, and that was unflatteringly depicted in The Da Vinci Code?

It has been repeatedly accused of cult-style manipulation, encouraging physical self-harm and having historical links with General Franco's fascist rule in Spain. Critics call it misogynistic, fundamentalist, and opposed to modern society. Ruth Kelly refuses to say whether she is a member of the group

Opus Dei denies the "cult" tag", saying it is a forward-thinking arm of the Catholic Church which is "flourishing in the modern world". If it were involved in cult-style practices, it says the Catholic Church would suppress it. It also denies any fascist links. It admits, however, that "mistakes" have been made in the past.

ORIGINS

Opus Dei was formed in 1928 in Madrid by the priest Josemaria Escriva de Balaguer. Its name means "the work of God". The fundamental idea was to encourage Catholic lay people to see religion as something that should direct every minute of their lives, rather than being a matter of just turning up for Mass and confession. Members are expected to live holy lives, evangelise people they know, and observe daily religious devotions.

In other words, Opus Dei demands a kind of monastic commitment, except that, in Escriva's words, disciples are "immersed in the blood-stream of society". "It does not take anyone out of his place," he said.

The spirituality of the movement is based on Escriva's book The Way, a collection of 999 meditations to help prayer. He was canonised by Pope John Paul II in 2002. The organisation is estimated to have between 80,000 and 90,000 members in 80 countries, and a reported 500 in the UK.

Opus Dei teaches that even the minutiae of life should be pleasing to God, from doing one's job well to being cheerful, from right beliefs to good manners. It puts a lot of emphasis on serving God through work. It encourages prayer, Bible-reading and Mass every day. Thus far, it is fairly orthodox Christian teaching.

FRATERNITY TALKS

Members have weekly "fraternity talks" with their superiors, discussing the successes, failures and targets of their spiritual lives - self-denial, "the apostolate" (trying to win others to Opus Dei), and sexual temptations. This is one area that opponents criticise, saying it can be manipulative and invasive, and makes unreasonable demands.

Certainly "spiritual direction" is not unique to Opus Dei, but critics say there are obvious dangers in a closed environment.

Opus Dei says these fraternal chats work in the same way as any spiritual guidance given in any Catholic organisation. Members are free to pick and choose what to discuss and what advice, if any, to take.

Since 1982, an internal statute has stated that new members must be aged 18 or over.

CENSORSHIP

Another criticism from former members is that they have been forbidden from reading all kinds of books - even many on the reading list at their Catholic University.

Opus Dei says members ask for advice before reading a book, and they are free to reject it.

"Even the Pope asks for advice about what to read, as he explains in his latest book," says Jack Valero, Opus Dei's UK spokesman.

CELIBATE MEMBERS

Some members - "numeraries" - are celibate, and agree to donate whatever earnings they don't need for basics such as food and housing to the organisation. Many who have left report that they had to pay their entire income to Opus Dei.

Reports that numeraries must have their mail vetted by superiors are dismissed by the group, which says this was customary in the past but was stopped some years ago.

Official Opus Dei literature maintains, "In their political, financial or cultural activities, they act with freedom and personal responsibility, not attempting to involve the Church or Opus Dei in their decisions."

SELF HARM

The practice that is most hair-raising for outsiders is "corporal mortification". Numeraries are given a spiked garter to wear round the thigh for two hours a day, and a whip for their own back or bottom. These exercises, explains the Opus Dei constitution, are "for the purpose of chastising the body and reducing it to servitude". Members are also encouraged to take cold showers every day and spend several hours in silence.

Opus Dei claims this is merely an example of Christian "self denial" although critics believe it goes beyond that.

In fairness, much of this alleged domination and self-punishment - though not the subterfuge - have been standard aspects of monasticism for 1,700 years. Whether Opus Dei uses them in a healthy and ethical way, and whether monastic tradition justifies anything anyway, is the source of much of the current controversy about the group.

A Short History of Christianity by Stephen Tomkins will be published by Lion later this year.

The Holy Grail-The Never Ending Search
The never-ending search

By Brendan O'Neill

Fascination with the Holy Grail has lasted for centuries, and now the Bletchley Park code-breakers have joined the hunt. But what is it that's made the grail the definition of something humans are always searching for but never actually finding?

Could an obscure inscription on a 250-year-old monument in a Staffordshire garden point the way to the Holy Grail - the jewelled chalice reportedly used by Jesus and his disciples at the Last Supper?

That is one theory entertained by Richard Kemp, the general manager of Lord Lichfield's Shugborough estate in Staffs.

Kemp has called in world-renowned code-breakers to try to decipher a cryptic message carved into the Shepherd's Monument on the Lichfield estate.

The monument, built around 1748, features an image of one of Nicholas Poussin's paintings, and beneath it the letters "D.O.U.O.S.V.A.V.V.M."

It has long been rumoured that these letters - which have baffled some of the greatest minds over the past 250 years, including Charles Darwin's and Josiah Wedgwood's - provide clues to the whereabouts of Christ's elusive cup.

Spot of bother

Poussin was said by some to have been a Grand Master of the Knights Templar, named after the order that captured Jerusalem during the Crusades and who were known as the "keepers of the Holy Grail".

Yet Oliver and Sheila Lawn, a couple in their 80s who were based at the code-breaking Bletchley Park in Buckinghamshire during World War II, have had a spot of bother with the Shepherd's Monument.
Oliver and Sheila Lawn, with the mysterious inscription

Mr Lawn said yesterday that deciphering the letters was "much more difficult" than cracking the Enigma code in WWII. He thinks it's a message from an obscure Christian sect, declaring their belief that Jesus was an Earthly prophet, not a divinity - while his wife Sheila thinks it could be a coded tribute from a widowed earl to his wife.

So yet another trail to the Grail seems to have run dry. What is it about the Holy Grail that so excites the popular imagination? And why are so many willing to believe that such an item exists, when there is a dearth of evidence?

Renewed interest

The Holy Grail is believed by some to have been the chalice used at the Last Supper, by others to have been a cup used by Joseph of Arimathea to catch the blood of the crucified Christ, and by others still to have been both. Some claim that Joseph may have brought the cup to Britain in the first century CE.

Stories about the Grail have been told for centuries. There has been a renewed interest since the publication of The Holy Blood and the Holy Grail in 1982, which claims, in a nutshell, that Jesus survived the crucifixion and together with Mary Magdalene founded a bloodline in France, the Merovingians, who were protected by the Knights Templar and later by the Freemasons. (Perhaps unsurprisingly, that book has been denounced as mad conspiracy-mongering by some.)

The Holy Grail has even turned up in Hollywood. In Steven Spielberg's Indiana Jones and the Last Crusade, the eponymous hero both fights off the Nazis and finds the Grail.

Now Ron Howard, the Happy Days actor turned film director, is making a big-screen version of The Da Vinci Code, Dan Brown's novel about how clues in Da Vinci paintings could lead to the discovery of a religious mystery, including the Grail, and shake the foundations of Christianity. Brown's novel has become a publishing phenomenon over the past two years, feted and hated in equal measure.

Purely legendary

According to experts, this is precisely where the Grail belongs - in fiction and films. Eric Eve is a tutor in theology and a New Testament scholar at Oxford University. He says he is unaware of any evidence for the existence of a Holy Grail.

In the version of the legend I know, the Grail is meant to be the chalice Jesus used at the Last Supper, subsequently brought to England by Joseph of Arimathea. But there is no 1st Century evidence about what happened either to the chalice or to Joseph - assuming he's even an historical character.

"The probability that the cup found its ways to Joseph and that he travelled with it to Britain is as near as nil as makes no difference. I would say it is purely legendary."

Richard Barber, author of The Holy Grail: The History of a Legend, published by Penguin next month, says the Grail legend came into being more than a thousand years after Christ's death.

"It is pure literature. It was imagined by a French writer, Chretien de Troyes, at the end of the 12th Century, in the romance of Perceval. His vision is at the root of all the Grail stories."

Conspiracy theories

Barber believes that 20th Century fascination with the Grail stems from "the revival of interest in medieval literature in the 19th Century, when Tennyson, Wagner and the Pre-Raphaelite artists were all enthusiasts for the Grail legends" - and that our fascination today has been boosted by the contemporary penchant for conspiracy theories and cover-ups.

"The Grail - because it is mysterious and has always belonged in the realms of the imagination - is a marvellous focus for the new genre of 'imagined history', the idea that all history as taught and recorded is a vast cover-up. Once this kind of idea becomes current, particularly with the internet, it acquires a life of its own - regardless of whether it has any basis in reality.

Even some of those who have written of the Grail as having some "basis in reality" admit that it is difficult to say what the Grail is, never mind where it is.

Erling Haagensen is co-author (with Henry Lincoln) of The Templars' Secret Island: The Knights, The Priest and The Treasure, which claims that "something" is hidden on the tiny island of Bornholm in the Baltic Sea.

"I do not know what the Holy Grail is," says Haagensen. "Something very important and with strong connections to the Holy Grail is hidden on the island of Bornholm. The Ark of the Covenant might theoretically be hidden there.

"But there is something even more important, which always followed the Ark of the Covenant, and which we can now prove is found at Bornholm. This will be revealed in our coming book," he adds, mysteriously.

Yet while some authors - and a host of conspiracy websites - believe that "something" will one day be found, even men of the cloth have little faith in the existence of the Holy Grail. Richard Holloway: 'Absolute nonsense'

"It's all good fun but absolute nonsense", says Richard Holloway(picture inset right), former Bishop of Edinburgh. "The quest for the Holy Grail belongs with the quest for the ark Noah left on Mount Ararat or the fabled Ark of the Covenant Indiana Jones is always chasing. There ain't any objective truth in any of it - but of course it's a dream for publishers, who know the world is full of gullible people looking for miracles and they keep on promising that this time the miracle's going to come true.

"Only it isn't - but the money keeps rolling in."

He'll forever be in my heart
A Dad's Poem...by a little girl Her hair was up in a pony tail, her favorite dress tied with a bow. Today was Daddy's Day at school, and she couldn't wait to go. But her mommy tried to tell her, that she probably should stay home. Why the kids might not understand, if she went to school alone. But she was not afraid; she knew just what to say. What to tell her classmates of why he wasn't there today. But still her mother worried, for her to face this day alone. And that was why once again, she tried to keep her daughter home. But the little girl went to school eager to tell them all. About a dad she never sees a dad who never calls. There were daddies along the wall in back, for everyone to meet. Children squirming impatiently, anxious in their seats One by one the teacher called a student from the class. To introduce their daddy, as seconds slowly passed. At last the teacher called her name, every child turned to stare. Each of them was searching, a man who wasn't there. "Where's her daddy at?" she heard a boy call out. "She probably doesn't have one," another student dared to shout. And from somewhere near the back, she heard a daddy say, "Looks like another deadbeat dad, too busy to waste his day." The words did not offend her, as she smiled up at her Mom. And looked back at her teacher, who told her to go on. And with hands behind her back, slowly she began to speak. And out from the mouth of a child, came words incredibly unique. "My Daddy couldn't be here, because he lives so far away. But I know he wishes he could be, since this is such a special day. And though you cannot meet him, I wanted you to know. All about my daddy, and how much he loves me so. He loved to tell me stories he taught me to ride my bike. He surprised me with pink roses, and taught me to fly a kite. We used to share fudge sundaes, and ice cream in a cone. And though you cannot see him. I'm not standing here alone. "Cause my daddy's always with me, even though we are apart I know because he told me, he'll forever be in my heart" With that, her little hand reached up, and lay across her chest. Feeling her own heartbeat, beneath her favorite dress. And from somewhere here in the crowd of dads, her mother stood in tears. Proudly watching her daughter, who was wise beyond her years. For she stood up for the love of a man not in her life. Doing what was best for her, doing what was right. And when she dropped her hand back down, staring straight into the crowd. She finished with a voice so soft, but its message clear and loud. "I love my daddy very much, he's my shining star. And if he could, he'd be here, but heaven's just too far You see he was a policeman and died just this past year When airplanes hit the towers and taught Americans to fear. But sometimes when I close my eyes, it's like he never went away And then she closed her eyes, and saw him there that day. And to her mothers amazement, she witnessed with surprise. A room full of daddies and children, all starting to close their eyes. Who knows what they saw before them, who knows what they felt inside. Perhaps for merely a second, they saw him at her side. "I know you're with me Daddy," to the silence she called out. And what happened next made believers, of those once filled with doubt. Not one in that room could explain it, for each of their eyes had been closed. But there on the desk beside her, was a fragrant long-stemmed pink rose. And a child was blessed, if only for a moment, by the love of her shining star. And given the gift of believing, that heaven is never too far. They say it takes a minute to find a special person, an hour to appreciate them, a day to love them, but then an entire life to forget them.

< Peace And Harmony>
In these days of strife and stress, take heed of these words to return peace and harmony to your soul:
If God brings you to it, He will bring you through it.

      Happy moments, praise God.

        Difficult moments, seek God.

        Quiet moments, worship God.

       Painful moments, trust God.

         Every moment, thank God.

Crazy About You
If GOD had a refrigerator, your picture would be on it.
If He had a wallet, your photo would be in it.
He sends you flowers every spring and a sunrise every morning.
Wherever you want to talk, He'll listen.
He can live anywhere in the universe, but He chose your heart.
What about the Christmas gift He send you in Bethlehem,
not to mention that Friday at Calvary.
Face it, He's crazy about you.
